Many of the older neighborhoods in the Northeast Sector are connected to Port Madison and the northeast beaches.11 Ferncliff 12 Hidden Cove 13 Manitou Beach 14 Point Monroe 15 Port Madison 16 Rolling Bay 17 Skiff Point 18 West Port Madison Point Monroe, the fishhook-shaped sand spit at the northeast tip of the island, is a classical example of a formation created by wind and wave action. As the bluffs South of the spit shed sand into Puget Sound the wave action carries this sediment northward and deposits it at Point Monroe. Then the northerlies out of Alaska take over and push it back to form the hook. Eventually this hook will close. The greatest unheralded gem in this sector of the Island is the magnificent Bloedel Reserve, almost 150 acres which include a bird refuge, an 84-acre second growth forest, Moss and Japanese Gardens, a Reflection Garden, Glen, ponds, meadows, and wildlife habitats. (The Reserve is shown in green at top of map.) Because Port Madison and Madison Bay had a mill in the last half of the 19th century, there is considerable history, lore and myth about this area, however, Fredi Perry has documented the facts in her book, "Port Madison, Washington Territory, 1854 - 1889" (read a brief summary of this marvalous little book). This makes Port Madison the oldest plat on the Island. Today, the new sailors have taken over from the old and you can watch them leave for, and return from, racing under full sail on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings out of Madison Bay's Port Madison Yacht Club. The bay and the east-facing shore is still held dear for its deep water moorage, close proximity to Puget Sound and good fishing areas, morning sun, views of maritime traffic, desireable location and its wonderful heritage. |
